Upon graduating from high school and completing her first year of college in 1992, Charmaine Donise Dillon, inspired by recruitment ads growing up, joined the U.S. Army to finance her education when her parents could no longer afford to send her to school and options were limited in her community of Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Once enlisted, she gained expertise in warehousing and supply and logistics management, a role she has maintained off and on for more than three decades. Her military experience was further shaped by her status as a military spouse, navigating between logistics work and teaching depending on where she and her husband were stationed. Over this period, she ultimately developed skills in procurement, vendor negotiation and logistics coordination.

Excelling in her role as logistics management specialist for more than 30 years, Ms. Dillon’s responsibilities include receiving requests for items needed from higher-ups and frontline supervisors; researching sources to obtain items at the best financial fit for the Army; and determining authorized items for procurement. In addition, she negotiates contracts with vendors, coordinates logistics, including destination and transportation methods, and manages multimillion-dollar hand receipts.

As a testament to her command, she has accrued numerous awards over the years, including an Army Achievement Medal for Civilian Service, or Superior Civilian Service Award, in 2015. She noted that it is in these moments of recognition that she appreciates the magnitude of managing massive financial responsibilities and maintaining exceptional supply chain standards that directly affect military operations and personnel readiness.

Attributing her success to a combination of boldness and determination in seizing opportunities—military and otherwise—Ms. Dillon has always been willing to take calculated risks regardless of not knowing where it could lead. Looking toward the future, she intends to focus on emerging technologies, specifically cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, largely inspired by her daughter’s coding education well before entering high school. Additionally, she intends to share the knowledge she gains with others, potentially teaching concepts at community centers in small-town America.

Amid her accomplished military career, Ms. Dillon attained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and Master of Arts and Education prior to teaching secondary education across numerous school districts between 2007 and 2020. Since 2011, she has been a dedicated member of the National Education Association, and, in her spare time, enjoys researching and studying, as well as writing children’s books.
